During the first four months of 2026, the AfriForum branch in Sasolburg, with only twenty volunteers, five lawnmowers and the will to keep their town tidy, cut 122 hectares of grass and cleaned 15 hectares of public land. Various green spaces, parks, public places and along the game reserve at the Leeuspruit are kept tidy by the branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is remarkable that the branch keeps Sasolburg and Vaalpark tidy with only a few volunteers. If the grass is not neat, it encourages littering and it is also not aesthetic and safe for the residents,\u201d says Alta Pretorius, AfriForum\u2019s District Coordinator for Mooi River.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

In addition to this major work that they regularly do, they also audited the local landfill site and concluded that the site was not up to standard. A safety audit has also been conducted at one school and there are plans to do this at more schools to help the schools maintain optimal safety for the sake of the students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Furthermore, the neighbourhood watch regularly does pharmacy duty in the evening to ensure that the staff who man the emergency pharmacy are safe when they lock up. On most Sundays the neighbourhood watch is also on a two-hour duty at the cemetery, so that families can visit the graves of their loved ones in peace and safety. At least 10 vehicles make use of this opportunity on Sundays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOnly the participation and contributions of more volunteers can further sustainably expand and strengthen AfriForum\u2019s actions,\u201d says Braam Muller, chairperson of AfriForum\u2019s Sasolburg branch.
