This follows Malema\u2019s conviction in September last year under the Firearms Control Act on five charges, including discharging a firearm in a built-up or public place without sufficient cause, unlawful possession of a firearm and unlawful possession of ammunition.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AfriForum laid criminal charges against Malema in August 2018 after he fired several shots with a firearm during the EFF\u2019s fifth anniversary celebrations on 28 July 2018 at the Sisa Dukashe Stadium outside East London.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum\u2019s Chief Spokesperson for Community Safety, the state is asking, among other things, for a minimum of 15 years in prison for the illegal possession of a firearm. \u201cThe magistrate has already proven that no one is above the law. The sentence must now also reflect the seriousness of the crime, regardless of Malema\u2019s political status,\u201d Broodryk emphasised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AfriForum played a decisive role in bringing this case to court. Without the organisation\u2019s intervention and sustained pressure, the case may never have been heard in the first place.
