The AfriForum branch in Vryheid today demanded in a letter to the Abaqulusi Local Municipality that 46 potholes in Emmett Street, between Smal and Kerk Street, be urgently repaired. This follows several unsuccessful requests to the Municipality to intervene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just last week, a vehicle overturned after the motorist swerved to avoid the potholes on this road. \u201cIt is extremely bad that the Municipality is not repairing these potholes. We regularly submit proposals for the annual integrated development plan (IDP), which include that the condition of the roads must receive urgent attention,\u201d says Andr\u00e9 van der Walt, AfriForum\u2019s Chairperson of the Vryheid branch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to financial statements, the Abaqulusi Municipality receives approximately R138 million in property taxes annually. This type of income is specifically there for non-billable services, such as pothole repairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe can no longer trust politicians with our tax money. The solution in local services lies in the hands of communities. We must start providing the services ourselves and then reclaim our expenses from the property taxes paid by residents,\u201d says Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum\u2019s Provincial Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
