Success: AfriForum delighted that matric results of 2024 will be published

AfriForum welcomes the news that the results of the matriculants of 2024 will once again be published in the media, as had been the case in the past.

In a statement issued by the Department of Basic Education, the department states that it is appealing against the instruction of the Information Regulator that the results may not be made public in the media. The department adds that it is subject to a court ruling dating back to 2022 that obliges it to publish the results. Until the appeal process is completed, the Information Regulator’s instruction has therefore been suspended, and it will be possible to publish results as usual.

The court ruling referred to, is that in the case of AfriForum and other parties which ensured that the results of the 2021 matriculants could be published. The judge ruled that the nature of the results being published did not violate anyone’s right to privacy and he instructed the department at the time to proceed with the publication. The success of 2022 therefore also played a decisive role for the matriculants of 2024.

“AfriForum maintains that it is in the public interest that this information should be shared in the media. This is one of the reasons why we brought this application at the time and were ready to proceed with legal action against the Information Regulator again this year. We are delighted that the court ruled in AfriForum’s favour in this argument in 2022 and even more pleased that the matriculants will again be able to have access to their results in this manner this year,” says Alana Bailey, AfriForum’s Head of Cultural Affairs.
