Say no to fracking in South Africa

The Department of Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment published new regulations that pave the way for fracking in South Africa. These regulations are currently open for public comment – and we need your voice.

Fracking is a method of extracting natural gas. It involves chemical fluids that are forced at extremely high pressure into the earth to break shale rock. This releases the methane gas that is trapped in the rock, which can then be extracted.

AfriForum believes – based on scientific research – that fracking poses severe threats to South Africa’s already scarce water resources. Fracking may lead to overconsumption as well as water pollution – and this a resource that is essential to people, agriculture and the environment.

Decisions that are currently being taken will determine whether our water resources will be protected for future generations or be destroyed beyond repair.

Add your name to AfriForum’s commentary before 13 February 2026 and help us to stop these dangerous regulations in their tracks and to keep it from coming into force.
