Krugersdorp branch demands that illegal sewage dumping stop immediately

AfriForum’s Krugersdorp branch has requested the Mogale City Local Municipality to immediately stop the illegal sewage dumping on the corner of Naude and Schoeman Streets. This follows a concerned branch member observing sewage being pumped into the stormwater drain on 3 April.

This action appears to be a shortcut instead of following the correct procedure, but it has serious consequences for the environment and residents of Krugersdorp in particular. AfriForum says that the municipality must act swiftly to identify the parties involved and bring them to justice.

Furthermore, the municipality must also provide feedback on the plans they have in place to hold the culprits accountable and how they will prevent illegal dumping of this nature in the future.

Stephanus Blignault, AfriForum’s district coordinator for the West Rand, calls on the municipality to put the necessary measures in place to prevent these spills. “We will monitor the situation closely to ensure that the municipality does what it needs to do to protect the community from further risks. If our request is not heeded, we will not hesitate to move on to more serious steps.”

The municipality has until April 11 to respond to AfriForum’s letter.
