Hawks’ investigation is a mere intimidation trick – AfriForum

The Hawks’ ongoing investigation into outrageous treason charges against AfriForum is nothing more than an attempt to intimidate and silence this organisation, as well as others who oppose the ANC-led government’s reckless policies. The civil rights organisation’s CEO, Kallie Kriel, argues that these efforts aim to silence alternative voices and are characteristic of oppressive regimes that must be resisted fiercely in South Africa.

Kriel’s reaction follows Hawks chief Godfrey Lebeya’s announcement that the unit is still investigating AfriForum after charges of treason were laid in early February.

“AfriForum will not be silenced by intimidation,” Kriel stressed. “On the contrary, this effort serves as motivation for AfriForum to continue, together with our colleagues in the Solidarity Movement, to oppose the ANC’s reckless policies and human rights violations in South Africa. This is done in the interest of the people of this country.”

He maintains that AfriForum will continue to oppose human rights violations, including the implementation of the controversial Basic Education Laws Amendment Act (Bela), which threatens the survival of Afrikaans cultural communities, as well as calls for violence against Afrikaners, as exemplified by slogans like “Kill the Boer”. However, if local resistance does not bear fruit, the organisation is determined to fight it on an international level.

“Engaging with President Donald Trump’s administration or any other government is not high treason. It is an exercise of a democratic right to garner international support for the protection of human rights in South Africa, in the interest of a community and its people,” Kriel concludes.
