Goud Street in Benoni now has 35 fewer potholes, thanks to AfriForum
The AfriForum branch in Benoni repaired a total of 35 potholes in just one street – Goud Street in Goedeburg in April. Residents donated 77 bags of tar, or 1,9 tons, for this major task. This project was undertaken after hours in collaboration with the community to make the road passable for road users again.
In Patten Road – a combination between a tar and a gravel road in the Jatniel neighbourhood – AfriForum’s Benoni branch removed a vehicle that was stuck in the mud in trench. They also filled the trenches with river rocks after removing all the bushes and litter. Furthermore, the overgrown stormwater pipes in this road were also cleaned and the holes in the road, which were full of water because of the heavy rain, were filled with soil.
In addition, the AfriForum team also undertook a large-scale clean-up project in a park in Morehill on the corner of Norman Street and Jolin Avenue where litter was removed, grass was cut and trees were pruned. Despite cold and wet conditions, the project was a huge success. Volunteers picked up litter, cut grass and pruned overgrown branches to make the park a pleasant space for residents again.
“We have a significant problem in Benoni with arrears in municipal service delivery, and that is why we are stepping in as a community,” says Nadia Olckers, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand.
AfriForum’s Benoni branch plans to continue these projects sustainably through regular collaboration with residents, donations and projects that improve infrastructure and promote safety.
