Delmas Hawks neighbourhood watch and others secure N12
AfriForum’s Delmas Hawks neighbourhood watch worked with other local safety role players to secure the N12 on 23 August. The N12 is notorious for crimes targeting motorists, such as spikings and hijackings.
The Delmas Hawks neighbourhood watch worked with the Delmas SAPS, Sundra Bulldogs and several of AfriForum’s drone pilots in Mpumalanga to make this operation a success. Dangerous parts of the N12 were patrolled with the help of nine drones, allowing the neighbourhood watch to determine if there were individuals lying in the veld alongside the road, waiting for an opportunity to attack motorists.
There was an information session in the morning to identify the problem areas in the area. The different role players were able to provide input and share their knowledge. In this way, the various role players were able to learn from each other and share information. This also strengthens the good cooperation between the groups.
“Criminals lie along the main road and roll stones into the road to damage cars. When motorists are then forced to pull over, they are robbed of their belongings,” says Carel Botha, chairperson of AfriForum’s Delmas branch.
“Thanks to the cooperation between our neighbourhood watch, drone pilots, the SAPS Delmas and Sundra Bulldogs, motorists were able to feel safe on the road that night. Operations like this have a huge impact and help reduce crime,” says Hennie Bekker, AfriForum’s district coordinator for the Highveld.
