Auret Road in Benoni – and other Ekurhuleni roads – needs urgent attention
Auret Road in Benoni is a major headache for motorists who must use this road. The road is full of potholes – big and small. At least 60 people have added Auret Road to an AfriForum petition where road users can report potholes on East Rand roads. Other roads that have also been reported more than once are Leith Road in Boksburg, as well as Benoni Road and Fowlie Road in Benoni.
The recent heavy rainfall has drastically deteriorated the condition of the roads, leaving it in an even more dangerous state. More than 200 residents have already made their voices heard by signing the petition demanding urgent repairs to the roads. AfriForum has forwarded the information collected so far via the petition to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality to address the problem as soon as possible.
According to Jurie Ferreira, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand, the condition of the roads puts human lives and vehicles at risk daily. “It happens more than often that motorists damage their vehicles, pedestrians risk their lives when crossing the road and even emergency services struggle to reach accident scenes. It is not just a matter of inconvenience – it is a matter of safety and basic service delivery,” says Ferreira.
AfriForum calls on the Ekurhuleni Metro to treat road repairs as a priority and not just provide temporary solutions, but to implement long-term plans to maintain roads effectively.
Communities that stand together bring change. AfriForum encourages the community to support its causes and help put pressure on the authorities to improve the roads.
