AfriForum’s specialised response unit, known as the proto team, has been further strengthened with the successful presentation of two more intensive training courses the past two weeks.

The 19th proto team training course was held between 27 and 30 August outside Uitenhage in the Eastern Cape where 21 volunteers from AfriForum branches across the region completed their training. During this course, 2 members also qualified as tactical shooting instructors, enabling them to further train communities in advanced firearms skills.

In Gauteng, AfriForum hosted its 20th proto team course from 31 August to 3 September at Fidelity’s Mutango Lodge outside Pretoria. A further 15 volunteers from the northern region successfully completed their training.

These intensive courses include tactical firearms handling, bleeding control and self-defence. It also enables volunteers to respond quickly and effectively to high-risk situations.

“We are incredibly proud of the 36 new proto-team members and the 2 instructors who are now joining AfriForum’s national network,” says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s Chief Spokesperson for Community Safety. “With each course, our communities become stronger and more resilient against crime. When the state cannot or will not act, ordinary people take on the responsibility to protect their communities.”

AfriForum’s proto team now includes more than 390 highly trained volunteers nationwide. The organisation currently supports 177 safety structures across the country with almost 11 000 active volunteers.
