AfriForum trains 22 new proto team members to strengthen community safety operations
AfriForum’s community response unit – known as the proto team – has grown by 22 new members following the successful completion of the organisation’s 18th advanced training course, held last week just outside Bloemfontein.
Volunteers from AfriForum neighbourhood watches in Bloemfontein, Viljoenskroon, Bultfontein and Rustenburg took part in the intensive programme. These new members are now part of AfriForum’s rapid response capability and have been equipped to act swiftly and decisively in high-risk situations.
The proto team course includes high-level training in tactical firearm handling, bleeding control and self-defence techniques. These skills are designed to prepare members to confront crime head-on, particularly in areas where criminal threats are severe and urgent response is critical.
This new intake brings the total number of trained proto team members in AfriForum’s national network to over 350.
AfriForum complements this specialised training with ongoing neighbourhood watch education, focusing on legal compliance, crime scene preservation, property protection and effective intelligence gathering.
Currently, AfriForum supports 177 safety structures across the country, driven by the dedication of nearly 11 000 volunteers.
“Crime doesn’t wait for policy or politics – it happens in real time and communities must be ready. Every trained proto team member increases our ability to respond where the state cannot. These 22 volunteers have shown the kind of courage and commitment that makes our communities safer,” says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s Chief Spokesperson for Community Safety.
