AfriForum secures Pretoria East’s roads against night-time spikings
AfriForum’s division for Community Safety, in collaboration with its Moreleta Park neighbourhood watch, last night (27 March) conducted a proactive anti-vehicle spiking operation in the far eastern outskirts of Pretoria. The operation focused on patrolling the outlying sections of Garsfontein Road and surrounding rural roads, identified as potential hotspots for vehicle spiking incidents. As part of this effort, AfriForum deployed a drone, equipped with night vision capabilities, to enhance surveillance and detect any suspicious activities in the area.
This operation forms part of AfriForum’s ongoing campaign to combat the rising threat of vehicle spiking across South Africa. AfriForum has been actively monitoring this dangerous trend for more than a year, where criminals place iron spikes, stones or other objects on roads to force vehicles to stop and consequently target, rob and in some cases murder motorists. The organisation’s neighbourhood watches have intensified patrols on major routes such as the N1, N4, R80, N12 and Garsfontein Road, while also assisting victims and collaborating with law enforcement to curb these incidents. In 2024 alone, AfriForum’s efforts have included the development of specialised training modules for its 177 neighbourhood and farm watch structures nationwide, equipping volunteers with the skills to prevent and respond to spiking incidents.
The deployment of advanced technology, such as night vision drones, emphasises AfriForum’s commitment to enhancing community safety through innovative and effective measures. Last night’s operation in Pretoria East aimed to deter potential criminals and reassure residents and motorists in the area. No spiking incidents were reported during the patrol, which is a testament to the proactive presence of AfriForum’s dedicated volunteers.
“Vehicle spiking remains a serious threat to motorists, particularly in areas like Pretoria East, where rural roads and highways are increasingly targeted. Our collaboration with AfriForum’s Moreleta Park neighbourhood watch and the use of night vision drone technology last night, demonstrate our unwavering commitment to keeping our communities safe. We will continue to expand these efforts and urge the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to their local neighbourhood watch or the police,” says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s Chief Spokesperson for Community Safety.
