AfriForum repairs potholes after Ekurhuleni Metro turns a deaf ear to complaints for two years
Two years – that’s how long desperate businesses and residents on Northern Road in Boksburg had to wait after the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality turned a deaf ear to the numerous requests for pothole repairs on this busy route. However, AfriForum’s Boksburg branch intervened last week and appointed a contractor, DIY Tar in a Bag, to carry out these urgent repairs.

According to Nadia Olckers, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand, local business Summit Petroleum reached out to AfriForum after repeated requests for the repair of the road were ignored by the metro. “The public’s requests were even uploaded to the metro’s official ticketing system but were repeatedly closed without the repairs being carried out. In the meantime, large trucks using the road worsened the pothole situation. The conditions eventually became unbearable, especially for motorists with smaller vehicles, and posed a danger to road users,” she explains.
“Although AfriForum also reached out to the metro and insisted on the repair of the road, the metro still refused to tackle the problem,” she explains.
This forced AfriForum’s Boksburg branch to step in and have the repairs done themselves, and repairs to a section of Northern Road and Short Street were completed last week.
“It is shocking that the community must wait two years for the metro. The poor condition of the route not only impacts road safety but also harms businesses positioned along it and therefore has a negative impact on the area’s economy. The repair of this road is therefore of critical importance to the community as a whole,” Olckers continues.
She describes this repair as the first phase of a vast project, as a large part of the road still needs to be repaired. However, she insists that AfriForum will continue to build on the safety and advancement of this community.
