AfriForum offers the elderly protection against the piercing cold
The AfriForum branch in Knysna gifted 40 blankets, 40 beanies and 40 pairs of warm socks to the Protea Service Center for the elderly in Plettenberg Bay last week (August 6) after the Western Cape government approached AfriForum’s Disaster Management Department to help protect these elderly people from the freezing temperatures.
The 40 residents of the home did not have enough warm clothes and blankets to get them through the freezing winter. However, the provincial government wanted to address this shortage as soon as possible and approached AfriForum to help with this. AfriForum immediately responded to the call and donated the warm clothes to the home, as well as bread, eggs, potatoes, and other basic necessities. The civil rights organization drew about R20 000 from its national emergency fund to donate these much-needed items to the home.
“AfriForum seizes any opportunity to help the community, and especially vulnerable individuals who are in need,” says Tarien Cooks, Disaster Management Specialist for AfriForum. “It’s also encouraging to see that different spheres of government are willing to work together to ensure a free, safe and prosperous community.”
AfriForum’s Knysna branch was set up in 2022 and has since completed several successful community projects. “However, these types of projects are impossible without the support of the community, therefore we would like to invite people to become part of AfriForum and to support its national emergency fund. Through this, we can continue to make significant differences during emergencies and serious disasters,” says Cooks.
