AfriForum neighbourhood watch removes trees from roads during severe windstorm in Uitenhage

AfriForum’s Mosel neighbourhood watch in Uitenhage responded quickly and effectively during the recent severe windstorm by removing trees that had blown over across several roads. The storm, with wind speeds of up to 100 km/h, caused widespread disruption throughout the town.

Using several chainsaws, the neighbourhood watch removed nine trees from roads within five hours. Thanks to this action, important routes were reopened quickly and traffic flow was only minimally affected. However, the removal of a large Akker tree that had fallen in Market Street was temporarily delayed when a swarm of bees was discovered inside the tree trunk. One of the neighbourhood watch members, who is a bee expert, was called in to remove the bees so that the clearing operation could continue.

“The swift action of the Mosel neighbourhood watch helped ensure the safety of the community on the roads. This is a good example of how AfriForum’s neighbourhood watches respond during times of crisis to help protect people and infrastructure,” says Minette van der Vyver, Leader of AfriForum’s Mosel neighbourhood watch. She also expressed her gratitude to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality’s parks department and the local fire department for their assistance during the clean-up operation and emphasised the importance of cooperation between the authorities and the community.

What makes this project even more significant, however, is that all the members of AfriForum’s Mosel neighbourhood watch who assisted are volunteers who temporarily left their workplaces to help the community. Each member also contributed their own chainsaws, fuel and time to make a meaningful difference.
