AfriForum emergency water points full and ready to help community while officials take care of themselves
AfriForum’s emergency water points in Germiston and Benoni are available to provide all members of the community with water for domestic use during Rand Water’s maintenance work in the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality. This is while the Metro’s emergency services have been called to provide water to the Germiston council hall.
According to AfriForum, it is a shame and an abuse of their powers that the metro puts the interests of its officials above the interests of the community as a whole. This action reveals a shocking disregard for their constitutional obligation to deliver fair basic services to all residents.
Many areas in the Ekurhuleni Metro have been without water for five days, with schools and homes for the elderly being the worst affected.
AfriForum previously wrote to the metro urging them to ensure reliable access to water during maintenance work, a request that fell on deaf ears.
“AfriForum will continue to serve the community where the Metro fails. The fact that the Metro shamelessly uses emergency services for their own convenience and gain indicates a disregard for the community’s needs,” says Nadia Olckers, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the East Rand.
