AfriForum branch in Parys installs emergency water tank in Tumahole
The AfriForum branch in Parys equipped the Tumahole area with an emergency water point over the past week. Although parts of the area do have access to municipal water, approximately 50 households still do not have running water in their homes. Some residents claim that they have not had running water in their taps for the past eight years.
The tank, which was installed between homes that do receive running water, has been connected to the municipal water supply so that those without access to water can easily carry it to their homes.
“It is a remarkable thing to be able to provide water to people who have to walk long distances to obtain it, thereby making life easier for them. However, it remains a disgrace that the municipality continues to fail to provide water to all residents,” says Alta Pretorius, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Mooi River.
“Certain households have been without running water for several years and while the municipality is doing nothing to change this, we are grateful that we were able to make a plan in the meantime and provide people with access to this essential resource,” says Schalk Burger, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Parys branch.
AfriForum calls on the community to remain involved, report injustice and work together to hold local government accountable. Contact Burger on 082 653 4281 to get involved with AfriForum’s Parys branch.
