AfriForum neighbourhood watches: Another 13 shooting instructors now trained
Another 13 AfriForum neighbourhood watch members were trained as shooting instructors in Paulpietersburg over the past two weekends. This training is presented by AfriForum’s Community Safety division and is focused on equipping members with the necessary firearms knowledge and skills to provide basic shooting training within their own communities.
The newly qualified shooting instructors are active members of various AfriForum neighbourhood watches in KwaZulu-Natal and Piet Retief, Mpumalanga. This initiative is part of AfriForum’s broader goal to empower local security structures through specialised training and expanding community-driven capacity.
“We have trained at least two shooting instructors per branch so that the instructors can support each other during training in their communities,” says Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s provincial coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal.
“This training program, which was launched in September 2022, has already produced numerous successful sessions across the country,” says Jacques Broodryk, AfriForum’s Chief Spokesperson for Community Safety. “This forms part of AfriForum’s ongoing efforts to help communities become more self-reliant and resilient. By prioritising self-defence training, we enable citizens to take proactive action to improve their own safety.”
The course, facilitated by AfriForum, qualifies members as accredited range officers and basic shooting instructors. These trained individuals volunteer their services to fellow neighbourhood watch members and branch members, and assist with the organisation and management of shooting exercises in collaboration with local leadership.
