AfriForum hands Knysna Municipality urgent service delivery priorities

AfriForum’s Knysna branch handed over a memorandum to the Municipal Manager yesterday with ten of the most important service delivery priorities in the Knysna Local Municipality. AfriForum is aware of several serious municipal service delivery deficits in Knysna and seeks to use this memorandum to highlight some of the most important issues that require immediate attention.

“The issues, which range from poor refuse collection, illegal power connections and sewage flowing through the streets, threaten the survival of Knysna as a community. If the Knysna Municipality cares for the wellbeing of its residents and wants to ensure the survival of the jewel of the Garden Route, then these issues should be addressed without delay,” says Marthinus Erasmus, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Southern Cape.

AfriForum has grouped the ten issues in order of importance and urgency and insisted in its letter that the Municipality pays serious attention to:

  1. Water infrastructure: conduct a comprehensive audit of the town’s water infrastructure and prioritise repairing water leaks
  2. Sewerage system: repair bottlenecks in the system to halt the flow of sewage in the area
  3. Electricity network: conduct a complete audit of the network and remove illegal power connections
  4. Disaster risk assessment: determine what incidents could potentially occur due to poorly maintained infrastructure and develop contingency plans for these possibilities
  5. Refuse removal: improve the efficiency of the current system so that garbage is removed in a timely manner and refine the functioning of the transfer station so that garbage does not accumulate
  6. Landfill site: commence with the immediate rehabilitation of the current site to ensure sustainable use of the facility
  7. Municipal pound and grazing land: start a municipal pound for animals and put communal grazing land into use
  8. Illegal occupiers and vagrants: remove vagrants and take timeous action against illegal occupiers
  9. Law enforcement: increase the capacity of law enforcement officers and improve the enforcement of existing bylaws
  10. Roads and vehicles: conduct a complete audit of all roads and municipal vehicles and compile a priority list for repairs

“AfriForum has once again emphasized that it is prepared to assist the Municipality with each of the issues. AfriForum believes that sustainable solutions are only possible if the community is actively involved in the process,” concludes Erasmus.
