AfriForum neighbourhood team keeps parks clean while municipality rests on its laurels

AfriForum’s Krugersdorp neighbourhood team did more to keep parks clean in May than Mogale City Local Municipality was prepared to do. In doing so, this neighbourhood team has once again proven that real change can happen through community engagement.

During their clean-up operations, the team collected 30 bags of garbage from public spaces. In addition, a trailer load of tree branches and pruned trees were removed, these trees were pruned by Mogale City but never removed. The team also cut 1.5 hectares of grass in parks and open areas.

According to Stephanus Blignault, AfriForum’s district coordinator for the West Rand, these efforts are aimed at improving the overall appearance of the environment and also at reducing safety and health risks. “Parks that are overgrown and full of garbage end up becoming a breeding ground for crime and also pose health risks to the community.”

AfriForum calls on the community to get involved with the Krugersdorp neighbourhood team and their activities by joining www.wordlid.co.za.
