10 000 liters of water available at AfriForum emergency water point during interruptions
Frequent water outages in Durban’s Moseley Park community forced the local AfriForum branch to set up an emergency water point. This water point has a capacity of 10 000 liters and is available during water outages on the corner of Main Street and Marshall Place.
“The reasons that the eThekwini Metropolitan Municipality provides for the frequent water interruptions are still very vague, but we will soon have a meeting with the Metro to discuss these problems and hopefully get clearer answers about these problems,” says Donald Brown, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Durban branch.
According to Eugene van Aswegen, AfriForum’s Provincial Coordinator for KwaZulu-Natal, this province is experiencing tremendous challenges with infrastructure that especially has an impact on water supply and sewage works. “These types of challenges force AfriForum and the community to act themselves to solve the problems, otherwise it gets completely out of hand,” says Van Aswegen.
In the meantime, AfriForum’s Durban branch is doing what they can to see how they can face the specific problems, especially with regard to water. “We will also meet with water specialists in the Durban Metro to see where we can join forces to solve these problems,” says Allison Schoeman, AfriForum’s committee member on local government at the Durban branch.
“Clean, running water is a basic right and the fact that the eThekwini Metro cannot deliver it sufficiently is a cause for concern for us. As AfriForum, we will continue to look for solutions and to assist the community as we are now going to do with this emergency water point,” concludes Van Aswegen.
