Alleged unlawful dumping could cause environmental degradation in Upington – AfriForum

The alleged unlawful excavation of sand and dumping of building rubble and household waste at the so-called south-western intersection just outside Upington could, according to AfriForum, result in widespread environmental degradation. The civil rights organisation has sent a letter to Elias Ntoba, Municipal Manager of the Dawid Kruiper Local Municipality, requesting urgent clarity regarding the alleged unlawful activities at this site.

According to Werner Strauss, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for the Kalahari, residents and stakeholders are concerned about the enormous excavations that have been left behind, as well as the dangers posed by the unregulated dumping of various types of waste.

“The community is by no means opposed to lawful and sustainable development, but the alleged disregard for environmental legislation cannot be overlooked. The requirements governing the operation of a landfill site have specifically been put in place to limit long-term environmental risks and dangers to community health,” says Strauss.

“AfriForum therefore demands that the Municipality conduct a comprehensive site inspection and, where necessary, enforce the relevant municipal legislation relating to the safe management of a waste disposal site. A concrete plan for securing and rehabilitating the site must also be drawn up to ensure that residents and the environment are protected.”
