Come what may – AfriForum branches in the north are not backing down from rain
The rainy season in the northern parts of the country did not put a damper on the hard work of AfriForum branches in this region. In January and February this year, the branches in Mpumalanga, Limpopo, the West Rand, Centurion and Pretoria cut a total of 168 hectares of grass in their respective towns.
AfriForum’s Centurion and Garsfontein branches cut a total of 70 hectares of grass (30 and 40 hectares respectively) in their respective areas during the first two months of 2026. The Krugersdorp branch cut 50 hectares of grass in public spaces in and around this West Rand mining town during two different grass cutting projects. Furthermore, AfriForum’s Nelspruit branch in Mbombela cut 22 hectares of grass. This includes grass on sidewalks along Dr Enos Mabuza Drive, Kaapschehoop Road, Flamboyant Street and on the corner of the R40 and Heron Street.
The rain also did not keep AfriForum’s branches in the northern region off the roads with a little over 8 tons of tar that was eventually used to fill potholes. The Nelspruit branch used 400 kg of tar to fill potholes in public spaces, while the Garsfontein branch used 8 tons of tar for potholes.
The branches also used 83 litres of paint to paint lines on the road, which is equivalent to about 2 km of road lines. At the same time, they also recycled 58 tons of trash.
“AfriForum’s neighbourhood teams are practical proof that communities do not have to wait for a state that is increasingly failing. By establishing full-time teams in our towns, we are deliberately building community self-reliance and showing that organised communities can do themselves what municipalities fails to do,” says Arno Roodt, AfriForum’s Head for the Northern Region.
