Nelspruit neighbourhood team steps in when service delivery falls short
The AfriForum neighbourhood team in Mbombela (Nelspruit) has recently filled the gap when service delivery in the Mbombela municipal area has been lacking. This team has cut several hectares of grass, removed 60 bags of refuse from public spaces and filled potholes with 400 kg of tar.
The team, among other things, cut the grass of sidewalks on Dr Enos Mabuza Drive, which borders the Steiltes neighbourhood and extends for 2 km, as well as cut the grass of various public parks in Skylab Crescent, Enterprise Crescent and Melkweg Road. In addition, the team removed six tonnes of garden waste. Almost 13 hectares of grass were cut in the municipal area in February so that pedestrians can use the pavements and parks.
The condition of the road infrastructure on Uitkyk Road and Boog Street has deteriorated to such an extent that road safety has become a major concern among motorists. The AfriForum neighbourhood team stepped in and repaired the potholes in this area.

According to Hugo de Beer, Chairperson of AfriForum’s Nelspruit branch, these types of projects are essential to counteract the deterioration of public spaces.
“The maintenance of sidewalks, parks and roads is essentially the Municipality’s responsibility, but the reality is that service delivery is increasingly lacking. AfriForum’s neighbourhood team therefore works daily to help fill the gap and offer practical solutions so that our town does not deteriorate further. We believe that communities themselves can make a difference by taking ownership of their environment.”
AfriForum’s Nelspruit neighbourhood team remains committed to creating a neat, clean and safe environment for everyone. These projects have been made possible by the dedication of volunteers and the financial support of AfriForum members. The public is therefore encouraged to get involved with AfriForum.
