AfriForum branch in Viljoenskroon cleans area around Rotary houses
The AfriForum branch in Viljoenskroon has been cleaning and tidying the area around the Rotary houses (housing for the elderly) for the past month. Although the Moqhaka Local Municipality is responsible for keeping the area tidy, the branch has noticed that it is so overgrown that it is impossible to see what is going on inside the premises. Because it is mainly senior citizens who live there, the branch decided to step in and clean it up for the sake of the residents’ safety and health. The AfriForum neighbourhood watch can also now see better during their patrols.
The grass was cut, bushes were removed and the area was also treated with weed poison to prevent it from becoming overgrown again. Approximately 450 square meters were cleaned while 67 bags of garbage, grass and branches were removed.
“This is a wonderful initiative by the branch to look after the interests of vulnerable people where they cannot do it themselves and where the Municipality fails to perform their duty,” says Alta Pretorius, AfriForum’s district coordinator for the Mooi River.
“The AfriForum branch is trying bit by bit to keep the town clean. It is joyful to see that residents are noticing this and are now making the effort to clean their premises themselves. I would like to say a special thank you to Willie and Lynne Griessel, who provided us with the workers. Together we are stronger and we will make Viljoenskroon a neat town again,” says Attie Barnard, branch Chairperson of AfriForum in Viljoenskroon.
