AfriForum collects more than 900 bags of refuse due to Bloem’s poor municipal service delivery

AfriForum’s refuse removal team in Bloemfontein collected more than 900 bags of refuse in two days in the City of Roses last week. This follows the Mangaung Metropolitan Municipality’s two-week long backlog and poor service delivery that left streets in many neighbourhoods littered with refuse.

The areas where refuse was cleared include Langenhoven Park, Generaal de Wet, Uitsig and Fleurdal. For residents of these communities, the accumulation of refuse not only created a health hazard, but also negatively affected the dignity of their neighbourhoods.

Christo Groenewald, AfriForum’s District Coordinator for Bloemfontein, says AfriForum Refuse Removal’s intervention is so much more than just a clean-up operation, but a real effort to improve Bloemfontein for all its residents.

“AfriForum encourages every resident to join AfriForum’s refuse removal services or to get involved with the local branch to make a real difference to the condition of Bloemfontein’s neighbourhoods. This project is not just about clean streets, but about the pride and hope that is cultivated among those who know that together we can build a better city than a crumbling municipality can ever break,” says Groenewald.

The AfriForum Refuse Removal team’s involvement is bringing about tangible results. In August alone, nearly 40 tons of refuse were collected – an achievement that is indicative of the power of organised community action. When piles of refuse make way for neat streets and clean playgrounds, it becomes clear that together we can counter the decline.

“The deterioration of service delivery may be the reality in the Mangaung Metro, but AfriForum Refuse Removal proves time and again that the community does not have to watch helplessly as it happens. Every refuse bag that is collected is a symbol of hope and the certainty that there are still institutions and people who are willing to take responsibility where the government fails.”
